Controlled assessment — also known as non-examination assessment (NEA) — refers to components of a qualification that are assessed through supervised work rather than a formal written examination. The level of control applied varies by subject and exam board, ranging from formal independent supervision to more flexible guided conditions.
Finding a centre willing to facilitate controlled assessments for private candidates is often one of the most challenging aspects of studying independently. Ark Education Centre offers this service across a range of GCSE and A Level subjects, providing candidates with a professional, properly supervised environment that meets all JCQ and exam board requirements.
The three levels of controlled assessment
Exam boards define three levels of control for assessed work. The level that applies to your assessment is set by the exam board and specified in the qualification specification.
High Level
Candidates work independently under formal supervision throughout the entire assessment. No collaboration or external resources are permitted during the assessment period.
Formal supervision requiredMedium Level
Candidates are supervised informally by a member of centre staff at all times during the assessment. Some guidance and resources may be permitted depending on the subject.
Informal supervision throughoutLimited Level
Candidates complete the majority of their work with limited direct supervision, which may include working away from the centre. The centre authenticates and submits the completed work.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between controlled assessment and NEA?
Controlled assessment and non-examination assessment (NEA) refer to the same type of internally supervised qualification component. The term "controlled assessment" was used by exam boards until around 2016, after which most boards adopted the term NEA. Both describe assessed work that is supervised and authenticated by the centre rather than sat as a formal written examination. You may see either term used depending on your exam board and specification year.
Can Ark Education Centre facilitate my controlled assessment?
We offer controlled assessment supervision across a range of GCSE and A Level subjects. Whether we can accommodate your specific assessment depends on the subject, the level of control required and timing. Please contact us before registering — we will confirm feasibility and advise on the process and any additional costs. We will only accept your registration once we have confirmed we can meet all assessment requirements.
Is there an additional fee for controlled assessment supervision?
An additional supervision fee applies for High and Medium level controlled assessments where a supervisor is engaged by our centre during the assessment period. The fee depends on the subject and the duration of supervision required. Limited level assessments may be included within the standard examination fee depending on the subject. Please contact us for a quote specific to your qualification before registering.
How far in advance should I contact Ark about controlled assessment?
As early as possible — ideally several months before the assessment window opens for your qualification. Controlled assessments require advance planning, confirmation of facilities, and arrangements in line with JCQ and exam board requirements. We cannot guarantee availability for late enquiries, and missing the assessment window means missing the qualification for that series.
