GCSE English Speaking Assessment for Private Candidates

We accept private candidates for the GCSE English Speaking Assessment

Most schools will not arrange the Spoken Language Endorsement for external or private candidates. Ark Education Centre does — for both AQA and Edexcel, with the assessment included in your standard exam fee.

The GCSE English Language qualification includes an endorsed component covering spoken language, known as the Spoken Language Endorsement (SLE). This is a separate assessment — graded independently from your written GCSE papers — and it appears on your results certificate alongside your 9–1 grade. Ark Education Centre offers this assessment to private candidates, home-educated students, and adult learners who are registered to sit their GCSE English Language examination with us.

Why the speaking endorsement matters

Although the endorsement does not affect your overall GCSE English Language grade, many further and higher education institutions and employers specifically look for it. Some universities state a minimum requirement of Merit or Distinction for certain courses — particularly those involving communication, law, education, and healthcare. Sitting the assessment, even where it is not strictly required, demonstrates your spoken communication skills and strengthens your overall profile.

⚠ Not sitting it has consequences If you opt out of the assessment or do not attend, your certificate will show Not Classified for the endorsement. This is visible to universities, colleges and employers. We strongly recommend all candidates take the assessment unless there is a specific reason not to.

The four endorsement grades

The Spoken Language Endorsement is graded separately from your GCSE English Language 9–1 result. It does not raise or lower your written grade. The four possible outcomes are:

Distinction

Outstanding spoken communication — strong structure, clear engagement, confident response to questions

Merit

Competent and clear communication — well-prepared, organised presentation with good audience awareness

Pass

Meets the minimum standard — clear enough for the assessor to follow and understand throughout

Not Classified

Did not meet the minimum standard, opted out, or did not sit the assessment

What the assessment involves

The Spoken Language Endorsement takes the form of a formal presentation on a topic chosen by the candidate. The entire assessment is typically no more than 10 minutes and includes both the prepared presentation and questions from the assessor.

1
Choose your topic You select a topic for your prepared presentation before the assessment date. The topic should be something you can speak about clearly and with confidence. We will advise you on suitable topics when you register.
2
Prepare your presentation Prepare a formal spoken presentation of around 5–10 minutes. You may use notes, but the assessment focuses on your spoken delivery — not reading from a script. Think about structure, clarity, and how you will engage your audience.
3
Attend on the assessment date We will notify you of your assessment date and time after registration. All assessments are video recorded and may be submitted to the awarding body as part of their moderation process. The assessment takes place at our centre in Ilford.
4
Q&A with the assessor Following your presentation, the assessor will ask questions about your topic. This allows you to demonstrate your ability to respond and engage in discussion — an important part of the endorsement criteria.

Exam boards we offer

We currently offer the GCSE English Speaking Assessment for AQA and Edexcel (Pearson) candidates. Both boards follow the same national grading criteria for the endorsement.

AQA

  • Assessment graded Pass, Merit, Distinction or Not Classified
  • Presentation on a topic of your choice
  • Video recorded and sample submitted to AQA
  • AQA Declaration of Assessment form completed by centre
  • Grade can be carried forward from a previous series
AQA endorsement guidance →

Edexcel (Pearson)

  • Assessment graded Pass, Merit, Distinction or Not Classified
  • Presentation on a topic of your choice
  • Video recorded and submitted as required
  • Every candidate must have the opportunity to sit the SLE
  • Grade can be carried forward from a previous series
Edexcel English Language →
ℹ OCR candidates OCR GCSE English Language also includes a Spoken Language Endorsement. However, OCR has specific standardisation requirements for assessor panels that we need to confirm in advance. If you are registered for OCR, please contact us before applying so we can advise whether we are able to accommodate your assessment.

Carrying forward a previous endorsement grade

Grade carry-forward — what you need to know

If you have previously sat the Spoken Language Endorsement and achieved Pass, Merit or Distinction, you may carry that grade forward into a future series rather than sitting the assessment again. This is useful if you are retaking your GCSE English Language written papers to improve your grade — you do not need to repeat the speaking assessment.

To carry forward your grade:

  • Indicate on your registration form that you wish to carry forward your speaking endorsement grade
  • Provide evidence of your previous result — a certificate or statement of results showing your endorsement grade
  • Ensure the grade is from the same exam board you are registering with us for

Opting out or choosing IGCSE

You may opt out of the speaking assessment entirely. If you do, your certificate will show Not Classified for the endorsement. Before deciding to opt out, please consider that some institutions treat Not Classified differently to a Pass — and it is always better to have attempted the assessment.

Candidates who do not wish to sit a speaking component at all may prefer to register for IGCSE English Language, which does not include a spoken language assessment. Please call us or send a WhatsApp message to discuss which option is most suitable for your circumstances.

Answers on questions

Frequently asked questions

Does the speaking endorsement affect my GCSE English Language grade?

No. The Spoken Language Endorsement is graded separately as Pass, Merit, Distinction or Not Classified. It does not contribute to or affect your GCSE English Language 9–1 grade. Both results appear on your certificate independently. Universities and colleges can see both, but your written grade and your endorsement grade are assessed and reported completely separately.

Can I carry forward a speaking endorsement grade from a previous year?

Yes. If you achieved Pass, Merit or Distinction in a previous series, you may carry that grade forward rather than sitting the assessment again. You must indicate this when registering and provide evidence of your previous result — a certificate or statement of results. The carry-forward grade must be from the same exam board you are registering with us for.

What if I want to opt out of the speaking assessment?

You may opt out, in which case your certificate will show Not Classified for the endorsement. We strongly recommend against this unless you have a specific reason, as some further education institutions and employers require a Pass, Merit or Distinction. Candidates who do not wish to sit any speaking component may prefer to register for IGCSE English Language, which does not include the endorsement. Please contact us to discuss your options.

How long does the speaking assessment take?

The whole assessment — including your prepared presentation and questions from the assessor — is typically no more than 10 minutes. You should plan for your presentation alone to last around 5–7 minutes, leaving time for the Q&A. The assessment is video recorded and a sample may be submitted to the awarding body for moderation.

Which exam boards do you offer the speaking assessment for?

We currently offer the GCSE English Speaking Assessment for AQA and Edexcel (Pearson) candidates. If you are registered for OCR GCSE English Language, please contact us before applying — OCR has specific standardisation requirements we need to confirm in advance before we can commit to accommodating your assessment.
