GCSE Modern Foreign Language Speaking Assessment for Private Candidates

MFL speaking assessments for private candidates — in a wide range of languages

Ark Education Centre conducts GCSE and IGCSE Modern Foreign Language speaking assessments for private candidates across all four major exam boards. We offer assessments in French, Spanish, German, Arabic, Urdu, Mandarin, Japanese and more — making us one of the most linguistically diverse private exam centres in East London.

The GCSE Modern Foreign Language qualification includes a compulsory speaking assessment that takes place before the written examinations. For private candidates and home-educated students, arranging this assessment independently can be one of the most challenging aspects of sitting a language GCSE. Ark Education Centre provides this service in-house using qualified and experienced assessors, across a wide range of languages and all major exam boards.

25%

The speaking assessment is worth 25% of your final GCSE MFL grade. Skipping it, or performing below your potential, directly costs you a quarter of your total marks. It is not an optional extra — it is a core, compulsory component of every GCSE Modern Foreign Language qualification.

Important — new 2026 specification for French, German and Spanish

⚠ The speaking assessment format has changed for 2026 The new GCSE specifications for French, German and Spanish (AQA and Edexcel) have their first exams in summer 2026. The speaking assessment format has changed significantly under the new specification. If your written exams are in summer 2026 or later, you will be assessed under the new format described below. If you are sitting under an outgoing specification (last exams 2025), the previous format applies — please contact us if you are unsure which applies to you.

What the speaking assessment involves

The MFL speaking assessment is internally conducted at our centre by a qualified assessor and audio recorded. The recording is then submitted to the exam board for external marking. The assessment takes place within the prescribed speaking window, before the written examinations.

New format — AQA & Edexcel 2026 onwards (French, German, Spanish)

1
Read Aloud — candidate reads a short passage aloud in the target language, assessed on pronunciation and phonological accuracy
2
Role Play — candidate responds to a structured scenario using prompts provided on a stimulus card
3
Picture Task / Conversation — candidate describes and discusses a photo card, followed by a general conversation on related themes
Foundation: 7–9 min  |  Higher: 10–12 min

Outgoing format — AQA & Edexcel (other languages & pre-2026 specs)

1
Role Play — structured conversation based on a scenario card
2
Photo Card / Picture stimulus — candidate describes an image and answers questions
3
General Conversation — extended discussion on themes from the specification
Foundation: 7–9 min  |  Higher: 10–12 min
ℹ Cambridge International (CAIE) IGCSE — different marking process For CAIE IGCSE MFL, the speaking assessment is internally conducted and internally marked by our assessor, with a sample then submitted to Cambridge International for external moderation. This is different from AQA, Edexcel and OCR where recordings are sent to the board for external marking. Our CAIE assessors are qualified to mark to Cambridge International criteria.

How to register

1
Complete our application form Register for your GCSE or IGCSE MFL examination using our application form. Include your exam board, language, and tier (Foundation or Higher). The speaking assessment is automatically included — there is no separate form to complete.
2
Confirm your tier entry You must be entered for one tier (Foundation or Higher) across all four skills — speaking, listening, reading and writing. You cannot change tier after the speaking assessment has taken place. We will advise you on tier choice when you register if needed.
3
We contact you with your assessment date Once registered, we will notify you of your speaking assessment date and time within the prescribed speaking window. Assessments take place at our centre in Ilford before the written examination period.
4
Attend your speaking assessment Attend at the confirmed time. Your assessment is conducted by one of our qualified assessors and audio recorded throughout. The recording is submitted to the exam board within two working days of completion. You may bring notes for the role play and picture task — but the assessment is assessed on your spoken delivery, not on reading from a script.
⚠ Tier entry — plan ahead You cannot change tier after the speaking assessment has taken place. Choose your tier carefully before registering. Higher tier is graded 4–9 and Foundation is graded 1–5. We recommend discussing tier choice with your tutor before applying.
